Each season in our Environment & Design trend book, our teams feature a selection of Designers who conceive an alternative, optimistic vision of natural resources and the materials of tomorrow.  Daria Biryukova is the first in this series to discover in the Sustainable Focus pages of our new FW 21-22 trend book.

The Designer, based in Eindhoven, defines herself as an alchemist of design. She created Studio Mixtura in 2016 to focus on reworking recycled raw materials.

Sandrine Maggiani : What was your ambition in creating Studio Mixtura?

DB: To break away from the traditional rules of ceramics by inventing an impulsive technique that goes beyond trendsand to offer alternative, sustainable, aesthetic solutions to our society which is currently questioning the profusion of objects that become obsolete very rapidly.

SM: What advances are offered by “Forz@glaze”, the exclusive glazing technique you created with Mineralz?

DB: By associating with Mineralz, a company that specializes in recycling, we create a ceramic glaze distinguished by the composition of its ashes made from the residues of household waste, glass and paper. This complex blend can be used for all types of ceramics, stoneware, earthenware, porcelain and leather materials. Besides creating exclusive colors, Forz@glaze is highly resistant to water and chemical products and respects the environmental standards currently in effect.

SM: Why did you choose to associate with Mineralz, aren’t you worried about your independence and growing notoriety?

DB: From the beginning, I didn’t only want to make a new product, but rather present all fields of creation to which ceramics can be associated. This longevity is based on new experiments that require creating bridges with industrial companies. Associating is also the best way to renew the image of the designer-craftsperson by presenting ceramics in all its vitality, diversity and creativity.

SM: What is your vision of a Designer’s role?

DB: Because we are at the point of seeing a shortage of natural raw materials, it is essential to propose solutions for unique conceptions such as products, new materials or services that use waste products by offering them a second life throughout their production, packaging, distribution and positive performance chain. And also propose end-of-life alternatives.

Our seasonal trend books and consulting teams are available to inspire your creative processes and accompany you as you conceive your products and collections to reconcile your brand objectives with today’s consumer aspirations. For further information contact us !
